Collectors now rank Kauba in a class with Remington and Russell as one of the great portrayers of the American West. His fascination with cowboys and Indians was triggered by the stories of the German writer Carl May.
He studied at the Academy of Fine arts in Vienna and later in Paris. His accurate depiction of the Wild West is remarkable because, according to Harold Berman, Kauba never visited America. His dear friend from Ohio sent gifts of saddles, chaps, hats, weapons and costumes, which translated into intricate detail in Kauba’s bronzes.
Dimension of this figural group raised on a marble plinth: Total height 15 ½ inches.
