Massive Bronze Eagle with Extended Wings Perched on a Rock. Japanese School, circa 1875.
A perched eagle with wings spread for flight, consisting of three separate bronze pieces: the rock on which the rapier’s claws grasp; the bird itself; and on the bird’s feathered back a removable cover piece revealing a hollow interior within the body of the eagle for hiding coins and/or jewels. Other than a tiny missing tip of one tail feather, the bronze is in excellent condition.
Height: 26 inches by a 21 inch wide wingspan.

Unfortunately, very little is known about the Japanese artists and foundries who created bronzes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, even though their art instinct has been well manifested in their bronze portrayals.
